The only clue that this old pharmacy building contains a café is the huddle of human torsos beneath the crooked wicker blinds hanging from the shop awning. If this is not a signal to step inside it should be. A café situated off the beaten track, with no signage and that packs a lively eclectic crowd (think bearded men in black shirts nursing babies, Stevie Nicks look-alikes in Indian skirts, stockinged and capped uni students and the odd suit) who are talking instead of texting, has to be worth a look.
Inside the music is blues and roots, the walls are painted black and the décor a charming mish mash of gilt framed mirrors, plastic plants and wood carvings and retro furniture while a bearskin rug covers the lino floor. As for the food, it takes something of a back seat but what’s on offer is simple and homey – think lashings of avocado on toast to eat with the coffees everyone's downing to keep the conversation flowing.
