In the gritty line-up of once-proud character buildings along the Chinatown stretch of Wickham St, a dark wood panelled street window with heavy red velvet curtains conceals The Manhattan Club, an old-fashioned supper club with bar, food and live music in a contemporary setting.
One step off the street takes punters to another world of Cosmopolitan and Manhattan cocktails, Roberta, Frank and Louis on the playlist, buffalo chicken wing and cheese platter bar snacks, refined mezzanine dining and later anything from a guitarist singer to jazz quartet on the intimate stage.
Pull up a seat at the bar of on a red suede banquette for a reasonably priced drink or head upstairs to the white clothed tables overlooking the action below. Here on the supper menu are an eclectic choice of share plates and mains – think sweet corn salad, braised beef pancakes, mushroom risotto, roast beef and cauliflower cheese or red wine braised pork with potato puree.
