Zagyoza
West End
ZAGYOZA HAS CLOSED AND BEEN REPLACED BY WOW DUMPLING AS OF JULY 2018.
Zagyoza is a tiny gyoza shop and eatery that brings a quaint and delicious touch of Japan to a corner of a Vulture St shopping strip.
Like so many restaurants in Japan, Zagyoza specializes in one aspect of the cuisine, offering delicious Japanese dumplings with an impressive mix of traditional and creative multicultural-inspired fillings.
Gyozas on offer include the traditional Pork Classic, Tokyo Curry (Japanese beef curry), Chicken Teriyaki, Korean BBQ (with kimchi), Blackbean Pork and, in a nod to West End’s Greek immigrants – Moussaka.
For vegetarians there’s Beetroot or Spinach Ricotta and Chickpea Lentil (with a Middle Eastern flavour) as well as a few Vegan options -Tofu Carrot, Pumpkin Kale - or the very Japanese Tofu Spinach Sesame special.
The chefs here are constantly experimenting with new flavours too, such as Ocean Catch (prawn/squid filling) and Lamb Curry (Middle Eastern).
Diners who eat in can enjoy a fragrant (sugarless) tea in flavours such as Jasmine Oolong, Green Tea or Japanese fermented red tea with their gyoza.
At lunchtime on Monday to Friday Zagyoza offers a fantastic value $10 lunch* between 11-2 with a ‘Bento Box’ including 3 gyoza of choice and rice and featuring a revolving daily menu of accompaniments such as Squid on Skewer, Japanese Potato Salad, Vegetable Tempura, Steamed Broccoli.
Need to know: Pick up a bag of daily made-gyoza to take away and heat up at home or catch Zagyoza at their weekly market stall at Jan Power Powerhouse, Manly and Mitchelton Markets.
Nice to know: At time of writing (Aug 2014) Zagyoza teams up with local bar The End for Japanese Night on Monday nights, with Asahi Beers at $5 and 5 gyozas for $5.
