Peng You China Kitchen Bar
Newstead
From the terrace overlooking the old gasometer, Peng You is casual lounge bar, strewn with stools, counter style tables and 1960s style yellow arm chairs but the dim lit interior evokes an alleyway in old Shanghai, with red Chinese lanterns, ornate ceiling panels, dark wood furniture and wallpaper designed to look like brick walls of the old town.
The extensive menu, which comes on a two-sided broadsheet size paper, combines Chinese tradition and an emphasis on fresh local produce with a tinge of Singaporean and Malay and even Japanese finding its way in.
Those after something light can chow down on the specialty griddle cooked gyoza or, from the tapas menu, deliciousness like the Peng You crispy marinated chicken wings, tofu pastry parcels, house wrapped pork spring rolls or go for a soup like Sichuan Hot and Sour or Classic Sweet Corn.
For something more substantial try the House Special Roast - either crispy skin roasted pork belly, Hong Kong style roast duck or Peking duck wraps.
Otherwise in keeping with tradition there’s a live seafood selection (Tassie Rock Lobster, Moreton Bay mud crabs or NQ coral trout) with a selection of sauce or other seafood dishes such as the delectable whole steamed baby barra with black bean, chilli and Shaoxing.
The rest of the menu features rice and noodle dishes, a tofu and vegetable selection and specialty meat dishes like slow-cooked pork trotter or the delectable Malay style curry roast duck with eggplant. And for dessert the deep-fried ice-cream is a treat.
Meanwhile from the bar you’ll find both beer and good quality wine on tap (NZ Marlborough sauvignon blanc and Barossa shiraz), served by the glass or carafe. Or select from the craft beers, wine varietals, spirits, Chinese liqueurs and cocktails like Lemongrass Mojito, Ginger Martini, Lychee Champagne Cocktail or hai Nan Island Iced tea.
