Finn McCools is an ambient Irish gastropub in Fortitude Valley that mixes the best of Irish tradition with inner city cool.
Located in the middle of the Brunswick Street Mall alongside the TCB, Finn McCools also pays homage to the historic building it occupies, with exposed rustic brick walls and rafters, pressed metal ceiling out front, and a café bar in the laneway outside.
Inside are all sorts of nooks and crannies, with glass-windowed, vine-festooned booths, barrel feature walls, pool tables, large communal tables under the striking old world chandeliers, open kitchen at the back and a large bar trimmed with stained glass running along one side.
Open from 11am till late daily, Finn McCools is the kind of casual welcoming place to drop in to any time of day, whether with a large group or solo.
The food menu mixes classic Irish dishes with traditional pub grub, all done very well. At any time of day a full Irish breakfast is available (bacon, eggs, grilled tomato, mushrooms, pork sausage*, beans, black pudding, toast and Barry’s Tea) otherwise there’s Starters such as Warm Cob Loaf and Butter, Soup of the Day, Cheesy Garlic Pizza Bread or Baby Toad in the Hole (traditional Irish pork sausage in Yorkshire Pudding with onions and gravy).
Irish Mains include Guinness Pie (Angus Beef with Guinness gravy, Calcannon mash and peas), Irish Stew (tender lamb in red wine gravy with root veges, potatoes and peas) served with Soda Bread or good ol’ Bangers* and Mash, or choose from dishes like Chicken Curry, Pumpkin Gnocchi, Char-Grilled Steak (including Tomahawk, T-Bone and Sirloin) with chips and salad or Pizza (Peperoni, Chilli Seafood, Tandoori Chicken or Margherita).
Dessert options include Irish Whiskey Cake with whipped cream or Warm Lemon Pudding or Chocolate Brownie with ice-cream.
Also, at lunch-time, for something light and easy there’s Chicken or Prawn Baguette, Cheese Burger or Steak Sandwich.
Drop in on Sundays and, from 7-11.30am tuck into an Irish Breakfast and, from 11.30am till late, the traditional Sunday Roast including 2 meats, roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, vegetables and gravy.
And for Little Leprechauns there’s a special menu (under $10) of Bangers and Mash, Ham and Cheese Pizza or Chicken Bites and Chips.
Drinks-wise, as well as the compulsory Guinness and beers on tap you’ll find French bubbles, a selection of boutique wines from Oz, Italy, France and Argentina and a range of cocktails, classic and with an Irish twist.
*The gourmet sausages at Finn McCools are sourced from ‘Paul the Butcher’, a 3rd generation Irish butcher from Tipperary.
Nice to know – Finn McCool was an Irish legendary giant, hunter and warrior, who, according to mythology, still lives in a cave below Dublin.
