Dutch Bite Cafe
Mt Tamborine
THIS CAFE IS NO LONGER OPEN.
The Dutch Bite Cafe is a little piece of authentic Holland mixed with South Africa found nestled in the hills of Mt Tamborine.
Slightly off the track to the town centre of Mount Tamborine, the Dutch Bite can be found at Eagle Heights and is a wonderful cultural experience for Dutchies and Aussies alike. The cafe is adorned with Dutch paraphernalia including hanging clogs, pictures, magazines, delft plates and salt and pepper shakers to make the experience truly authentic.
But the best bit is the homemade Dutch food, the likes of which is a rare find in South East Queensland. Bitterballen, stroopwafel, poffertjes and boerenkool are some of the traditional homeland delights on the menu at the Dutch Bite Cafe. And no need to worry about pronouncing them, they are made to be tried.
For a taste of the menu with translation:
Bitterballen – deep fried crumbed beef ragout
Stroopwafel – a waffle with caramel-like syrup inside
Poffertjes – small pancakes topped with icing sugar, cinnamon and maple syrup
Boerenkool – kale mixed with potato and spices and topped with Dutch Smoked Sausage.
Olibol - Dutch 'doughnut' - fried batter with apples, sultanas, currents and icing sugar
The food menu also ofers Dutch breakfasts such as Smoked Dutch sausages topped with poached eggs on toast or Dutch Pancake stack and, for lunch, a Dutch Burger (house made patty or steak with Dutch slaw, curry sauce and salade, served with chips.
Food aside, there’s nothing more Dutch than a pair of clogs which can be purchased at the tiny shop Clog Barn next door. For sweet tooths, the Clog Barn also sells many sweet Dutch delights and for the collectors, there is a range of Delftware, plates, tiles and other souvenirs, made in Holland, along with Aussie made mugs, indigenous African crafts and other eclectic gifts.
In a nutshell: for those thinking of a daytrip outside of Brisbane, this is a must visit here for lunch and to experience a little bit of Holland in Australia.
