Drop Of The Week

Wines To Kick Back With

Spring time is so close you can smell it! The weather is getting slightly warmer and the plants are starting to show some colour. Lazy bodies which have also been hiding from the cold have started to emerge to bask in the glorious sun.

I like many, love the splendour that spring brings with it. It only encourages you to head outside for a picnic, go camping for the weekend, or simply, indulge in a lazy BBQ with friends. Such occasions call for a cheeky glass of wine or two. And honestly, all you want is something easy to kick back with which also puts a smile on the dial.

There is a perception that many wines under the fifteen mark are just easy drinking and not complicated. This couldn't be further from the truth. Granted, there are wines out there in this range which are out of balance with acid, sweetness, oak, tannin and lack fruit, but if you know what to hunt around for, there are also many bargains which certainly punch above their weight.

Take the guess work out and check out these bargains which are all readily available and priced to suit everyone's budget and can be found discounted below $20

Lindeman's Chardonnay Pinot Noir $23

This fizz brings together fruit from the Adelaide Hills and Yarra Valley. Bright, fresh and crisp, there's very attractive citrus and apple flavours wrapped up with a lemony zip. From start to finish the freshness is the hero delivering a wine ready to tuck into without being too dry.

Delicious and well priced and can be found around the traps below $20. Readily available.

McWilliams Hanwood Chardonnay $14

McWilliams Hanwood Chardonnay's label

Good buying this. Recommended retail is $14 but you can often find it discounted around $10 which slots right into bargain territory. Stone fruit with a touch of buttered toast and not heavy on the oak. A pretty easy an tasty Chardonnay.

Fifth Leg Shiraz 2012 $15

A reliable drop which will go even better with the smell of a BBQ sizzling away nearby. Forest fruits, cherries and blackberries headline the show with some solid back up from spicy black pepper. Medium bodied, the fruit has good weight and hangs around nicely providing a decent length which is juicy and soft.

Fox Gordon Eight Uncles Shiraz $20

This is type of wine makes you feel like you have cheated someone and not paid what it is worth.

Hard to believe this can found around the traps for the $16/17 mark. You'd be happy to part with much more than that for the quality delivered.

Loaded with cherries, plums and mulberry fruit, this is mouth filling stuff. There's a shake or two of black pepper, the fruit is moreishly juicy, and the finish is super smooth and deliciously long.

Bargain hunters, get it in your trolley! I’ve seen it as cheap as 15 bucks!

Knapstein Cabernet Sauvignon 2012 $22

From South Australia’s Clare Valley, this is a bargain for the generous plummy and black fruits delivered. Great depth and length with a smooth as silk finish. The type of wine that doesn’t need thinking, just drinking. Grab it at the Paddo Tavern.
