Ploughman Bar is Alderley’s friendly local and first small bar, which has made its home in the suburb’s original general store and saddlery.
Converted by the owners (an architect and an electrician) into a funky inviting space with original bay windows and planter box partitions, Ploughman Bar makes a great place to stop in any time of day for a cool drink and a delicious Ploughmans platter.
The drinks menu features an extensive range of local and international craft beers (with 4 Oz beers on tap), a smattering of boutique wines and a range of small-batch mostly Australian spirits, Hrvst juices and Karma sodas.
The compact food menu revolves around the divine in-house pickled vegetables (a perfect match for beer) and the Ploughmans theme, with both Small and Large Ploughmans Platters the signature dish. These comprise bread from local bakers Crust & Co, cured meats from [email protected]’s, pickled veges and cheeses and in addition there’s a Ploughman sandwich, Pastrami on Rye with horseradish mayo, mustard and pickled veges or Grilled Cheese (sourdough loaded with rich gruyere cheese).
Beer lovers will find nirvana at Ploughman Bar, with the menu offering Lager (from Edge in Vic or Golden Road in the USA); IPA from the USA, NZ and Vic; Ales, Pales and Saisons (think Green Beacon 3 Bolt Pale Saison Ale or, from the US, Rogue Dead Guy Maibock Ale); Reds and Browns such as the Yeastie Boys Rye Amber from NZ and Nail Hoppy Red Ale from WA: and the Dark Side (such as the USA’s Evil Twin Xmas Eve Imperial Stout).
Wine drinkers will find a small range of light, medium and full-bodied wines available by the glass. And spirit drinkers can chose from a curated list of mostly Australian small-batch spirits such as Mc Henry Dry Gin from Tasmania and Hoochery Rum from WA as Nips, Mixed or just add your own choice of soda or juice from Ploughman’s list for an extra $4.
