This cosy jewel of a cafe inhabits a rare heritage row of Federation-era shops. Inside the walls have been stripped back exposing the original rough hand crafted brick walls, the furnishings are mismatching – a velvet green armchair and a red couch being the most comfortable – and the crockery is retro.

Menu-wise, the coffee is Genovese, they serve spider drinks and the food is home-cooked in a Grandma meets Nigella Lawson way - thick sausage rolls filled with a herbaceous meatloaf and laden with tomato relish, spinach pie, and toasted Turkish sandwiches with generous fillings a notch above the usual – try the shaved ham, sour cherries, roast sweet potato, taleggio and baby cos or the mushroom, balsamic, brie, rocket and red onion.

They are also dog friendly – tie your city slicker pooch up to the weathered bench outside and they’ll obligingly offer a bowl of water.
