Gilbert and Sullivan's hilarious rom com opera, sung in English and set in the make believe Japanese town of Titipu where flirting is considered a capital crime, lightens up the Conservatorium stage for a three week season.
The prequel to the opera sees Nanki-Poo, son of Emperor (the Mikado) betrothed to the court cougar Katisha, a fate worse than death as far as he is concerned. Naturally he flees, disguised as a travelling musician, and falls in love with Yum Yum who, as a good rom com would have it, is betrothed to the town's low cost tailor Ko Ko.
Nanki-Poo's luck turns when he learns that Ko Ko has been fortuitously sentenced to death for flirting and he returns to claim the heart of Yum Yum only to find the story doesn't end happily there but plunges into full scale absurdity.
