The State Library of Queensland is a destination in itself, with, alongside the state archives and reference titles, a funky children’s activity corner, an exhibit gallery, teacup patio, bookshop, ground floor devoted to free internet, a cinema with free Sunday movies and an indigenous centre.

With nowhere near the amenities but impressive in its own right is the modern state of the art BCC Brisbane Square Library, a multi storey affair with river views from upper levels, reading pods and lounges, a forest themed children’s corner and young adult section with X-Boxes amongst the attractions.

The rest of the Council crop of local libraries, some of which are housed in their original historical premises, have a seamless interchange of books between centres and provide free community activities for young and old.
