St Brigids stands as a landmark red stone monolith atop a crest in Red Hill, designed by its architect RS Dods to resemble the 13th century Cathedrale Sainte Cecile in Albi France.
Built for Archbishop Duhig in 1912-1914 as part of his mission to place Catholic worship places on every piece of prime real estate in Brisbane, it is considered one of Dods’s finest pieces of work. And being at the centre of a local poor Irish parish, it came to represent the Irish Catholic cause in Queensland.
Just above the entry porch is a sculpture by LJ Harvey of a life-size St Brigid holding a model of the church.
