Broadway Hotel

Of the 19th century Brisbane hotels still in existence, this one perhaps more than any encapsulates the unbounding optimism that existed during the boom times of the 1880’s. This is reflected in its elaborate decorative façade, with an octagonal tower and Dutch gables amongst its many wedding cake features.

Built in 1889 for publican Micheal McKenna, the 3 storeyed hotel was designed with superior accommodation for out-of-towners on the upper levels, featuring luxuriant double and single bedrooms, bathrooms and drawing rooms and the hotel soon became a drawcard and local landmark.

The hotel had remained reasonably intact and had recently been refurbished when a fire tore through in the mid 2010, destroying much of the interior and blackening part of the façade. As a result it is closed to the public until further notice.
