Plush velvet curtains, intricate plasterwork and deco lighting form the backdrop for moviegoers who come to watch a mix of offbeat arthouse and cult films and rerun box office hits in this latest reincarnation of the 1910 Lyceum Movie Theatre.
Since the Dendy closed its doors here, Tribal has taken over, pulling out the first rows and replacing them with beanbags, showing scream classics and throwing comedy nights to incite a new generation to experience old-fashioned movie going fun.
And the crowds are packing in, armed with jaffas, popcorn and wisecracks just like in the ’40’s and ’50’s, only this is the 21st century, with the added benefit of BYO beer and wine.
On cult and theme nights, expect to be part of a rowdy crowd, when the atmosphere is much like watching with a roomful of friends at home.
And don’t be put off by the rabble of activity and posters in the once elegant foyer – inside, the cinemas remain in their original art nouveau glory.
Adults $8-12 Conc $6-8 Tues $5
