Men dressed in lederhausenFor two weekends in October, a small section of the RNA showgrounds is transformed into a full-blown Bavarian Festhaus along with a mini sideshow alley and German food market when crowds aged from 0 to 100, many of them in feather caps, lederhosen and dirndl, descend on the gates at opening time only to leave twelve hours of chicken dances, bratwursts, yodelling and cow bell ringing later.

Perhaps this is because, once ensconced under the Festhaus roof with beer stein in hand, oompah band rolling out the barrel and dirndl clad Frauleins wandering everywhere it’s easy to forget you’re in Brisbane at all.

Venture outside the Festhaus marquee and there are food stalls peddling delicious schnitzel and sauerkraut, pretzels giant and small, strudel, sausages galore, plates of mushroom in sour cream and cake. And there’s a sea of tables outdoors (some under fig trees) too in case the oompah or yodelling gets too much.

Children are well catered for with sideshow rides, a petting zoo, treats like cotton candy and plenty of dance floor opportunities to run riot.

For those Expo 88 goers who lived through six months of nightly chicken dances at the Munich Festhaus, here is a chance to relive those nights while for others it’s a chance to have some good kitschy old fashioned fun for all the family or group of friends.

And those unable/unwilling to head to the showgrounds for Oktoberfest can experience it on a smaller but no less exuberant scale at the German Club.
