Wax Lyrical Production's heartbreaking musical theatre show, The Last Five Years, will take to the stage for a limited season at the Brisbane Powerhouse from October 7 -14.
Beautifully directed by Zoe Tuffin, the intimate cast comprises stage heavyweights Lizzie Moore (Kiss Me Kate) and Kurt Phelan (Dirty Dancing) who make the roles of Cathy Hiatt, a struggling actress, and Jamie Wallerstein, a budding writer, their own.
The story involves the highs and lows of the couple's relationship over the past five years, but from each other's personal point of view. In fact, for most of the time, the actors perform solo on stage.
The audience follow their tales chronologically, but - uniquely - not from the same point in time. Instead you will be taken on the heart-wrenching journey by Cathy and Jamie from opposite ends of their relationship's timeline.
This love story is a moving and thought-provoking snapshot of one couple's relationship, made even more relatable with the inclusion of poignant music and lyrics.
Meeting at a surprise party for musical theatre star, Lucy Durack (Wicked and Legally Blonde The Musical), and having worked together a number of times, including in Kiss Me Kate, both actors were keen to join forces on another project. It was simply a matter of finding the right script and the right director, both of which they have found in Zoe Tuffin and with Jason Robert Brown's The Last Five Years.
Regardless of your relationship status, audiences will identify closely with the romance story as it unfolds to share the most intimate and personal feelings of Cathy and Jamie falling in - and out - of love.
