The future of theatre in this city is sure to be thriving, with La Boite’s HWY Festival of new work returning for performances, workshops, masterclasses and more, March 12 – 24, La Boite at the Roundhouse Theatre, Kelvin Grove.
To celebrate the talented and diverse artists developing new work, HWY Festival in its third year will again showcase a range of powerful and exciting theatre as well as offering opportunities to meet, collaborate and engage with artists and industry.
You only have to look at previous participants, such as the successful productions Single Asian Female, Prize Fighter and The Mathematics of Longing, to see how previous HWY projects became success stories. Michelle Law, writer of Single Asian Female, said that “having a rehearsed reading before an audience provided me with the feedback I needed to make the play a fully formed work”.
Six new Australian plays will be up for the HWY Performance Program, as well as one live art experience, and a new theatre work inspired by an ancient text. You can also check out the HWY Pitch Sessions, with a discussion of four artists pitching ideas for new works.
Add to that the HWY Skills Labs, which will feature workshops across two focus areas – Technical Production and Performance. These will be facilitated by industry leaders including Wil Hughes (Sound Design and Composition), Craig Wilkinson of optikal bloc (Video Design), Thomas Larkin (Audition Technique) and Saffron Benner (Dramaturgy).
La Boite’s 2018 Artists-in-Residence will also be active: Ngoc Phan and Krissy Kneen will present the latest drafts of their works, while Jodee Mundy will facilitate a story-telling masterclass for the Deaf community and AUSLAN speak. La Boite’s Associate Artists, Digi Youth Arts, will present a bold new work highlighting what it takes to be an Indigenous young person in this country, and you’ll also hear from La Boite’s latest Assistant Creatives, who’ll host the inaugural HWY Podcast on Saturdays during the festival.
