The Flick

Cremorne Theatre Qpac

2014’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play, The Flick, is set to impress audiences when it’s performed by Queensland Theatre at the Cremorne Theatre, QPAC from 10 February – 5 March.

When a play has the Pulitzer Prize moniker attached, it’s always worth a look, and playwright Annie Baker’s work has seen it garner four and five-star reviews from publications like The Age and Arts Hub, with The Guardian in London saying, “Astonishing. Hypnotic. This is like no other play in London.”

Directed by the acclaimed Nadia Tass – who brought us the brilliant Disgraced last year – The Flick’s setting is at the flicks, i.e. a movie theatre. Young film buff, Avery (Kevin Hofbauer – Rush), takes a minimum-wage job as an usher at crumbling Massachusetts movie palace, The Flick. There, he bonds over movie trivia, low-level embezzling and shared ennui with fellow employees, Sam (Ben Prendergast – Predestination, Offspring), and free-spirited projectionist, Rose (Ngaire Dawn Fair – Rush, The Slap). Dion Mills also features.

The play has been described as a funny and delicate examination of the millions of tiny dramas that make up everyday life, and highlights the tradition of film and the lost elements in the transition to digital. It sounds like a must-see for theatre and film buffs alike.

This Brisbane production presented by Queensland Theatre breathes new life into the hit production by Melbourne ensemble, Red Stitch.
