Brisbane International Film Festival (BIFF 2018) is back with more than 100 Australian and international feature films, documentaries and shorts, screening at various venues across Brisbane from October 11 to 21.

Presented by the Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA), venues this year include GOMA’s Cinémathèque, Event Cinemas (Brisbane City Myer Centre), Five Star Cinemas (New Farm Cinemas and Elizabeth Picture Theatre), Reading Cinemas (Newmarket), Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre, State Library of Queensland and the Brisbane Powerhouse.

BIFF 2018 offers audiences a rich showcase of films from around the world including Australian premieres, family films, screenings with live music, panel discussions with directors, workshops for emerging filmmakers, and a mystery movie screening that will only be revealed on the day.

Brisbane International Film Festival 2018 - Mao's Last Dancer

These are just some of the highlights of BIFF 2018:

Film premieres include the Australian premieres of the award-winning Korean movie Hotel by the River; Danish provocateur Lars Von Trier’s The House That Jack Built and, as the closing night film, the Queensland premiere of Leave No Trace by Oscar-nominated American director Debra Granik.

Brisbane International Film Festival 2018 - Celeste

Opening night features Celeste, a compelling love story by Brisbane-born director Ben Hackworth, set in tropical Far North Queensland and starring Radha Mitchell, Nadine Garner and Thomas Cocquerel. This film will also be shown accompanied by a dinner in the two-hatted GOMA Restaurant, featuring a menu inspired by the film’s Far North Queensland setting.

Brisbane International Film Festival 2018 - Ladies in Black

Festival Patrons, director Bruce Beresford and producer Sue Milliken AO, will discuss their latest collaboration Ladies in Black, based on the bestselling novel by Madeleine St John. Australian Academy-award nominated Beresford will also join internationally acclaimed dancer, Li Cunxin, to talk about Mao’s Last Dancer, Beresford’s adaptation of Li’s autobiography in In Conversation + Film

Brisbane International Film Festival 2018 - WIK vs QLD

Wik vs Queensland, a documentary about the High Court’s landmark 1996 decision to grant native title co-existence to the Wik people of Far North Queensland, will be followed by a free panel discussion with activists and lawyers including Noel Pearson and filmmaker Dean Gibson.

Brisbane International Film Festival 2018 - The Passion of Joan of Arc

The Passion of Joan of Arc, a 1928 silent French film widely regarded as one of the greatest films ever made, will screen with live music performed by Brisbane post-rock band, Hazards of Swimming Naked.

Brisbane International Film Festival 2018 - Frogman

Frogman, presented by UK theatre company Curious Directive, offers a unique virtual reality and live performance experience in the form of a thriller focused on the fragility of childhood imagination,

Free workshops for aspiring filmmakers include You Tube Creator Day, hosted by online video experts Changer Studios; and the Queensland Emerging Screen Talent Conference, a day of industry roundtables, seminars and workshops presented by the Brisbane International Film Festival and Griffith Film School.
