The 7 Stages Of Grieving

Qut Gardens Theatre

Twenty years after its hugely successful debut, Wesley Enoch and Deborah Mailman’s play, The 7 Stages of Grieving, is playing at QUT Gardens Theatre in May.

The play is embarking on a national tour this year and hasn’t lost any of its power or relevance. This re-mounted production is by Queensland Theatre and The Grin and Tonic Theatre Troupe and has been adapted by Director, Jason Klarwein, to reflect actor Chenoa Deemal’s own heritage. Design elements incorporate themes from the tropical rainforests and beaches of her country and clan (Thitharr Warra) in the Cape York Peninsula, and some local language of her tribe is also used.

The 7 Stages of Grieving

Originally performed by Deborah Mailman, other talented women have taken on the demanding solo role, with Deemal having previously played the part to great acclaim. “Watching the show hit such an emotional chord, it stayed with me for years,” says Deemal.

The 7 Stages of Grieving

Although at times sad and devastating, The 7 Stages of Grieving also employs some humour and lighter moments as it invites us to face hard truths about the way the indigenous peoples of this land have been treated, and for us to all join hands and grieve. At 55 minutes long with no interval, it packs an effective punch.
